A bedroom fit for a Tween (or Teen)

Our transformation from a boy’s room to a girl’s tween/teen paradise is nearly complete and all things pink that my daughter once tolerated for her mom’s sake *wink* is now a thing of her past.  This is now officially “her domain”!  Hopefully you can find some inspiration with some ideas we were able to do and change it to suit the queen in your life.

Before

After

Here’s what we did:

1)  Paint

We weren’t successful with a computer match because of the velvet.

So, we opted for Valspar paint in “Purple Frenzy” (or as my daughter calls it “Electric Violet”) on the accent wall and Glidden’s “Muslin White” (mixed in a Valspar paint).  I’m still missing my Ralph Lauren paint that never failed to cover in one coat.  The purple covered the old stripes in 2 coats whereas the white, took 3 or more coats to cover a light sand!

2)  Bed Covering

“He Baroque My Heart” duvet set, black velveteen bedskirt and purple bolster pillow all from www.wakeupfrankie.com This is a great site for design inspiration and furnishings for girl tween/teen rooms.  Lots of neat and unusual stuff that the queen in your life will be drooling over.  I’m also very happy with the quality.

3)  Furniture

We sanded and repainted the desk and chair.

We added a storage ottoman purchased from Home Goods and recovered it.

We also added a TV cabinet from Home Goods but painted it to match.

New furniture piece found at Home Decor but was in a baby blue and brown; repainted to match new tween room decor

4)  Bed Canopy

Instead of the former round princess style, I opted for a rectangular drape styled canopy which looks more sophisticated.

5)  Decor pieces

Spray painted a lot of the former decor in the new color scheme for about $5 worth of spray paint.  Peel and stick wall art.  Purple rugs from Target.

6)  Lighting

The chandelier lighting http://www.wakeupfrankie.com/Products/444/1647/Lighting/6+Light+Black+Chandelier we ordered is pending delivery which is great because 1) it’s a new project and 2) I get to talk about how to change a light fixture soon!

Of course, the color scheme may not be for everyone, but for the queen in my life, its perfect.
