Portfolio-Budget Kitchen remodel

Updating a kitchen doesn’t have to break your bank.  There are some simple things you can do to give your kitchen a clean and updated appearance.

This was a recent single family home I purchased for renovation and resell.  The lower kitchen cabinets were in horrible condition from what appeared to be water leaks.  The counters were the old style butcher block laminate and the floors were painted concrete.

I demo’d the lower cabinets and all appliances.  The upper cabinets were in good condition but the finish was worn.

I reinstalled new lower cabinets, unfinished from Lowes.  These cabinets are oak and come in various sizes.  You can fill in gaps up to 6″ with oak strips between cabinets.  Installed new stone look 18″ ceramic flooring from Home Depot after scraping up the existing paint finish.  Painted walls with Ralph Lauren paint from Home Depot (at this writing, Ralph Lauren paint is no longer available at Home Depot).

I sanded and painted the upper and lower cabinets in Behr’s Espresso Brown from Home Depot.

Installed new stone look Terra Roca laminate counters from Home Depot.  Home Depot and Lowes both sell premeasured, pre-cut laminate counter pieces in their stores and are easy to install with two people.  Installed 1″ mosaic tumbled marble tile backsplash from Home Depot.  Installed new stainless appliances delivered free from Lowe’s.  Installed new brushed nickel hardware.  Installed new energy efficient lighting from Home Depot.

The finished result is a transformed modern looking kitchen.  If you’d like to know how to do any of these projects, please comment and let me know.  I welcome your feedback.
